Why You Should Always Put Your Luggage in the Hotel Room’s Bathtub

Posted on August 14, 2025 By admin

If you’re staying in budget or older hotels, placing your suitcase in the bathtub right after check-in can help you avoid pests, dirt, and spills.

Bedbug Protection:
Bedbugs hide in mattresses, headboards, and carpets, often hitching rides in luggage. Smooth,

cold tub surfaces are hard for them to climb, making it a safe temporary spot while you inspect your room.

Cleaner Than Carpet:
Hotel carpets harbor dirt, bacteria, and stains. The tub is typically among the most sanitized areas, especially since the pandemic.

Spill Safety:
It keeps your belongings safe from tipped drinks, leaking toiletries, or other messes.

My Routine:

Put zipped luggage in the tub.

Inspect bed, headboard, curtains, and furniture for bedbugs.

Unpack only if the room passes inspection.

Bedbug Signs:
Dark sheet spots, rust-colored stains, shed skins, sweet/musty odor, or reddish-brown bugs the size of apple seeds.

Extra Tips:

Avoid placing luggage on beds or upholstered furniture.

Use a flashlight for dark areas.

Keep luggage closed when not in use.

Wash and dry clothes on high heat after trips.

Bottom Line:
It’s quick, simple, and might become your go-to travel habit.
