When a Tree Reminded Me of Life’s Fragility

Posted on August 26, 2025 By admin

It was one of those perfect summer afternoons—clear skies, a gentle breeze, and the scent of fresh grass in the air. We had spread out a picnic blanket in a quiet grove while the kids played nearby. Our daughter wandered a little farther than usual and stopped beside a tall tree. “Mom, Dad, come see! This tree has stripes—it’s so pretty!” she called.

As she reached toward the trunk, something didn’t feel right. My husband quickly ran over and gently pulled her hand back. That’s when we noticed that the “stripes” weren’t part of the tree at all—they were a cluster of caterpillars, camouflaged against the bark.

We later learned that these were Lonomia caterpillars, an insect that can pose serious health risks if touched. Fortunately, we avoided any contact and immediately reported it to local environmental authorities. They safely removed the insects and placed a warning sign so others would be aware.

That experience reminded us how important it is to approach nature with both wonder and caution. Not everything that looks beautiful is safe to touch. Now, when we explore outdoors, we remind our kids—and friends—that if you see unusual patterns or insects you don’t recognize, admire them from a distance and call the experts. A little awareness can go a long way in keeping everyone safe while still appreciating the beauty of the natural world.
