Senate Passes Laken Riley Act In First Move After Trump Inauguration

Posted on January 25, 2025 By admin

The GOP-led Senate passed the Laken Riley Act, moving it closer to President Trump’s desk. The bill, passed 64-35 with support from all Republicans and 12 Democrats, mandates federal detention of undocumented immigrants accused of theft, burglary, or violent crimes. Named after Laken Riley, a student murdered by a released immigrant, the legislation also includes Sarah’s Law, requiring detention for crimes causing death or serious harm. Senate Democrats expressed concerns over costs, enforcement challenges, and expanded powers for state attorneys general. The Department of Homeland Security estimates implementation will cost $27 billion in the first year. The House must now approve the Senate version before the bill reaches Trump for signing.
