Minneapolis Shooter’s Mother Retains Legal Counsel, Declines Police Interview

Mary Grace Westman, mother of 23-year-old Robin Westman, the Minneapolis school shooter, has hired attorney Ryan Garry

and declined to speak with police. Garry said she is “completely distraught” but not responsible for her child’s actions,

noting she needed legal guidance after the tragedy. The attack at Annunciation Catholic Church and School left two

children dead and 18 others injured. Robin, a 2017 graduate of the school, had previously gone by Robert before transitioning.

Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed dozens of interviews with relatives and acquaintances, though authorities

have not spoken directly with Mary. Her past employment at Annunciation has drawn heightened attention, creating a personal link to the

site of the attack. Investigators are examining family environment, writings, and communications for insight into Robin’s motives.

Community leaders stress the need for counseling and trauma support for victims, students, staff, and families,

including the shooter’s relatives. Attorneys note retaining counsel is a standard step to protect rights during complex investigations.

While authorities continue pursuing leads, the community mourns through vigils, counseling, and outreach. Mary’s legal

representation underscores the tension between legal rights, family trauma, and public interest in high-profile school tragedies.
