A waitress in a hotel restaurant notices a man and his teenage son and discovers why the boy looks so sad and disinterested in his food. The reason breaks her heart.<\/p>\n
Sarah enjoyed her job. A lot of people didn\u2019t get that waitressing was one of the most rewarding of jobs \u2014 at least where she worked.<\/p>\n
Most of her customers at the seaside resort hotel were there on vacation and always in a good mood.<\/p>\n
When a man walked in with his teen son, she was struck by the way he watched the boy with desperate eyes. They ordered the house special, but while the man ate his meal with gusto, the boy pushed the food around on his plate. His eyes were even sadder than his father\u2019s.<\/p>\n
\u201cWasn\u2019t the pie good?\u201d Sarah asked cheerfully as she cleared away the boy\u2019s plate \u2014 the apple pie with ice cream was virtually untouched. The boy blushed and let his fringe fall forward to hide his face.<\/p>\n
The father answered with a smile. \u201cThe pie is great, it\u2019s just that Kyle isn\u2019t very hungry today.\u201d<\/p>\n
An act of solidarity and courage is worth a thousand words.
\nSarah smiled and said, \u201cYou\u2019d better have more appetite for lunch tomorrow \u2019cause we are having our barbecue special!\u201d<\/p>\n
The man answered. \u201cWe\u2019ll do our best!\u201d Then he got up and steered the boy towards the elevator that left up to the rooms. A few minutes later, Sarah saw him again in the lobby, talking to the manager, looking very serious.<\/p>\n
The man walked back into the restaurant and came over to Sarah. \u201cCould I have a word with you?\u201d he asked. Sarah noticed that he was very good-looking, despite his sadness, and his voice was gentle and kind.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy son. He has leukemia, and he is here to undergo chemotherapy at the institute,\u201d the man said in his quiet voice. \u201cTonight he wants to shave his head so he won\u2019t feel the cancer is winning when his hair starts to fall out.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll be shaving my head too, so what I wanted to ask you is that you don\u2019t comment on it. Please just act normal\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah nodded and replied, \u201cOf course. Please don\u2019t worry. I\u2019ll talk to the rest of the staff too.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man smiled. \u201cThank you! I\u2019m Oscar, by the way!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sarah smiled back. \u201cI\u2019m Sarah\u2026 See you tomorrow!\u201d<\/p>\n
When they walked into the restaurant for breakfast the next morning, Oscar and Kyle were in for a surprise. Sarah had shaved her head too! She grinned at the bald-headed father and son and said, \u201cI thought I\u2019d join the club!\u201d<\/p>\n
Kyle started giggling. \u201cYou look so funny!\u201d he cried.<\/p>\n
Sarah placed her hands on her hips and gave him a mock frown. \u201cFUNNY? I\u2019ll have you know that this is what the best heads are wearing in Paris this season. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead of brooding over his bald head, the boy was laughing at Sarah\u2019s jokes, and Oscar threw her a grateful glance. Oscar had been raising Kyle alone since his wife had also died of cancer when their son was just seven.<\/p>\n
When Kyle had been diagnosed, Oscar was devastated. He was facing the same enemy again, and this time he could lose all he had left, his beloved son. Sarah\u2019s cheeky grin and her brave gesture uplifted his heart.<\/p>\n
When Kyle went up to rest a while later, Oscar went back to the restaurant to talk to Sarah. \u201cThank you,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have no idea what your gesture has meant for Kyle and for me. You sacrificed your beautiful hair\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah shook her head. \u201cIt was no sacrifice,\u201d she explained. \u201cI lost my mother to cancer when I was very young, and I remember her courage. She taught me everything I know about love. I just wanted to pass it on.\u201d<\/p>\n
Oscar had tears in his eyes and he gave Sarah a grateful hug. From that day on, Sarah became Kyle\u2019s best friend, and when she had her day off, she would take father and son to see the local sights.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, Kyle\u2019s treatment went well, and the doctors declared that he was in remission. \u201cBut we\u2019re coming back soon!\u201d Kyle cried, and Oscar nodded.<\/p>\n
