Mason named him\u00a0<strong data-start=\"524\" data-end=\"533\">Buddy<\/strong>, and together we built a small blue doghouse beneath the maple tree in our yard. For the first time since my divorce, laughter filled our evenings again. But our peace didn\u2019t last long \u2014 our neighbor,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"735\" data-end=\"753\">Mrs. Henderson<\/strong>, soon appeared, frowning at the noise and the muddy pawprints near her perfect roses.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"1373\">A few days later, Mason returned from school in tears. Buddy\u2019s house was destroyed \u2014 shattered wood, torn blankets, and an empty yard. We found the poor puppy shaking behind the fence. My first instinct was anger, but when I saw my son\u2019s face, I knew I had to show him something stronger than resentment. \u201cKindness isn\u2019t weakness,\u201d I told him. \u201cSome people just forget what it feels like.\u201d That night, we rebuilt Buddy\u2019s home from scratch, painting it brighter than before. As rain poured down, Buddy began barking wildly. Mason rushed outside and discovered Mrs. Henderson lying in her garden, injured and unable to move. Because of Buddy\u2019s noise \u2014 and Mason\u2019s courage \u2014 she was rescued before things turned worse. The next morning, she appeared at our door holding cookies and humility. \u201cFor the boy and his hero dog,\u201d she said softly. Her tone was different \u2014 genuine, grateful, human.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"2412\">From that day forward, Mrs. Henderson was no longer just the grumpy neighbor with the perfect lawn. She became a friend. She brought treats for Buddy, planted flowers beside his blue house, and shared stories over tea. Even our landlord, moved by the tale, allowed us to keep Buddy \u2014 and waived a month\u2019s rent. Every time I see that once-stern woman laughing with our golden dog at her feet, I\u2019m reminded that the gentlest lessons often come from unexpected places.
