Kindness has a strange way of circling back, often when you least expect it. For one elderly teacher, a small act of generosity on a freezing winter day led to a chain of events that would resurface years later.<\/p>\n

Snow drifted down in quiet flakes, blanketing the streets in white and muffling the city\u2019s usual noise.<\/p>\n

Inside a cozy diner, Mr. Harrison\u2014a retired teacher with warm eyes and thinning gray hair\u2014sat by the window with a steaming cup of coffee and his dog-eared copy of \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned a page, occasionally glancing up to watch passersby through the frosted glass.<\/p>\n

He liked this spot. It was warm and familiar. The diner door swung open with a sharp chime, and a boy stepped in, shivering as he stamped snow from his worn shoes.<\/p>\n

The boy looked around thirteen, wearing a thin, oversized coat\u2014clearly handed down\u2014and shoes much too large. His cheeks were raw from the cold, his dark hair plastered to his forehead with melting snow.<\/p>\n

The boy hesitated near the door, then drifted toward a vending machine. He reached into his pockets and pulled out a handful of coins, counting them carefully.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t enough. His shoulders slumped.<\/p>\n

Mr. Harrison closed his book and sipped his coffee, keeping his eyes on the boy.<\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me, young man,\u201d he said gently.<\/p>\n

The boy stiffened, turning toward him, his expression wary and embarrassed. \u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCome sit with me a moment. I could use some company,\u201d Mr. Harrison offered with a kind smile.<\/p>\n

The boy shifted uncomfortably. \u201cI\u2019m not\u2026 I was just\u2026\u201d He motioned to the vending machine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s alright,\u201d Mr. Harrison said, his voice calm and kind. \u201cIt\u2019s too cold to be standing. Come on, I don\u2019t bite.\u201d<\/p>\n
