he muttered, feeling more overwhelmed by the minute.
\nHomework wasn\u2019t usually this hard, but tonight felt different. The house was too quiet, and the problems in his workbook too confusing. The internet wasn\u2019t helping either\u2014no video tutorial or search result could explain the steps the way he needed. And then he remembered something his mother always told him.<\/p>\n

\u201cRyan.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay, Ryan, this is an emergency line, not a tutoring service. Is everything alright? Is there an emergency?\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when Ryan\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have called if my mom was home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her concern grew.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs there another adult with you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. I\u2019m all alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
And just like that, the call shifted from puzzling to urgent.<\/p>\n
The dispatcher kept Ryan on the line as she traced the call. Within minutes, officers were en route to his address. When they arrived, they found Ryan alone in the house\u2014no babysitter, no guardian, and it was nearly 10 p.m.<\/p>\n
