He died at age 84 from natural causes in Los Angeles on August 21,<\/p>\n
according to a statement obtained by NBC News from the actor\u2019s publicist.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith a career spanning over five decades, Amos leaves behind a legacy<\/p>\n
of groundbreaking work on both television and film, and a dedication<\/p>\n
to positive African American representation in media,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
His son Kelly Christopher Amos referred to his dad as \u201cmy best friend, and my hero.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,\u201d his son continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold \u2026 and he was<\/p>\n
loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He<\/p>\n
