I Made My Elderly Parents Choose between Living in My Garage and a Nursing Home

A widow living alone in a five-bedroom home, two rooms functional due to conversions, created a guest house in the garage for visiting children. When her parents asked to move in, she agreed and informed her children. On moving day, the woman’s children started moving their grandparents into the garage, confusing the parents who expected to live in the house.

“They thought they could move into my house since I have five bedrooms.”

The woman explained that she only had two bedrooms since she had converted the others into offices and hobby spaces. The spare bedroom she had was mainly reserved for her dogs.

And although the guest house had everything needed to live a happy life, the woman’s parents were still disappointed and upset. She lamented:

“They said that they wanted to live in the house, not out in the garage like Fonzie.”

The woman clarified the arrangement to her parents, who were disappointed and wanted to live in the main house. Despite the guest house being well-equipped, the parents expressed dissatisfaction. Seeking advice on Reddit, users debated the fairness of the parents’ expectations and suggested setting boundaries or exploring alternative arrangements.

However, her parents were confused when the family started moving their belongings into the garage. The woman clarified that that was where her parents would be living.
