Federal officials have announced an 18-month prison sentence for a Texas man involved in a dangerous incident at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint. The case began on August 1, 2023, when 26-year-old Kevin Dominguez approached the Highway 57 checkpoint near the Texas–Mexico border. Agents conducting routine inspections detected unusual movement coming from his vehicle’s trunk, prompting them to take a closer look.
A trained Border Patrol canine alerted agents to a hidden passenger, and Dominguez was directed to the secondary inspection area. When officers opened the trunk, they discovered an undocumented individual concealed inside. Instead of complying with commands, Dominguez abruptly reversed his vehicle in an attempt to flee. During the escape, he struck a Border Patrol agent, triggering an urgent response from authorities.
Dominguez fled the checkpoint but was later located and arrested. Prosecutors stated that his actions put both the concealed passenger and law enforcement officers at significant risk. The injured agent received medical care, and investigators gathered surveillance footage, witness accounts, and additional evidence to support the charges. Dominguez ultimately pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer and transporting an individual unlawfully.
During sentencing, officials emphasized the seriousness of using a vehicle to evade federal agents and the need to deter similar incidents. They noted that the prison term reflects both the danger posed and the clear intent to escape law enforcement. After completing his sentence, Dominguez will be placed under supervised release as ordered by the court.
