Your Washing Machine Can Do More Than You Think

When most people think of a washing machine, clothes are the first thing that comes to mind — but this hardworking appliance can do so much more. Many everyday household items quietly gather dirt, oils, and bacteria, yet they’re often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Washing them regularly not only keeps your home fresh but also helps extend the life of things you use every day.

Kitchen items are a good place to start. Oven gloves, dishcloths, and microfiber mops can hold on to grease and germs far longer than expected. Washing them weekly at 60°C with a bit of baking soda keeps them hygienic and odor-free. The same goes for reusable canvas tote bags — they collect crumbs, spills, and bacteria from groceries and daily use. Placing them inside a pillowcase and running a gentle cycle at 30–40°C helps restore them to freshness without damage.

Bathroom and bedroom fabrics also deserve attention. Shower curtains and bath mats should be washed at least once a month at 40°C with white vinegar to fight mildew and neutralize odors. Stuffed animals, comforters, and pillow covers can trap dust and allergens; cleaning them gently at 30–40°C and air-drying afterward helps maintain softness and hygiene, especially in homes with children or pets.

Even sneakers and gym gear can safely go through a gentle wash. Placing shoes in a pillowcase and using a 30°C cycle removes dirt and sweat while keeping them in shape. By including these overlooked items in your laundry routine, you’ll not only improve cleanliness but also create a fresher, healthier home environment — proving that your washing machine is one of the most versatile tools in the house.
