We Thought They Were Chia Seeds—Until They Started to Move

What began as a peaceful dinner quickly turned into an unsettling experience. My friend and I were enjoying a quiet evening at a trendy restaurant when she paused mid-bite, staring at her salad. Tiny black specks dotted the leaves—what we first assumed were chia seeds. But when a few began to move, the realization hit us like a wave of disbelief.

We called the waiter, who quickly whisked the dish away, but the damage was already done. Panic spread among nearby tables as we worried about what we might have already eaten. Out of caution, we went to the hospital, where doctors ran tests and prescribed preventive medication. Thankfully, we were fine, but the shock of that night lingered far longer than the taste of the meal itself.

The restaurant later claimed the issue came from spoiled ingredients supplied by a vendor and offered apologies and refunds. Yet no amount of explanation could undo the discomfort or unease that followed. Something as simple as a dinner out had turned into a reminder of how easily trust can be shaken.

Now, every time I see chia seeds, I think of that night—not with fear, but with awareness. It taught me that even in familiar places, it’s okay to pause, look closer, and trust your instincts. Sometimes, vigilance is the simplest form of self-care.
