TEEN WOMAN TOOK THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM RING, AFTER HER GRANDMOTHER’S PASSING, AS SHE OWNED IT

A woman, Redditor u/RINGTHROWAWAY2468, had shared her story on Reddit’s r/AITA subreddit. She shared that there is a tradition in their family. There is a family heirloom, a ring, and that ring is passing through from one generation to another.

She explained that her grandmother passed away, and she left the ring to pass through the next generation. Their generation was the oldest daughter gets the ring, and gives it to her oldest daughter. Her mother had a sister, and her mother was the younger one, so her aunt had the ring. At first she gave the ring to her sister, since she had no daughter but two sons, the ring belonged to OP.

OP shared that she always liked the ring, and wanted to have it since she was a little girl. But things changed, after her aunt had adopted a 17-year-old girl. Op was 14 at that time. The conversation of the giving the ring to OP happened when she was 11, so her aunt changed her mind, when she adopted a daughter who was older than OP.

OP explained, “My grandmother agreed it was the sensible thing to do and told me I could have the ring. My mom told me she’d just give it to me when she got it. For reference, I am 21 now and this adopted “cousin” is 24. I am the oldest biological granddaughter.”

After the passing of her grandmother, they were cleaning her house. And OP stated that she heard her aunt, and the adopted daughter about their plan to snatch the ring out of the jewellery box before they gave it to OP. As they left that night out for dinner, she stated that she needs to leave early since her manager called her, and went straight back to her grandmother’s house to take the ring.

OP explained, “I went straight back to my grandmother’s house and took the ring out and left before anyone could come back. I took it to my apartment and hid it just to be safe. I have no idea what will happen today when my aunt realizes it’s missing.”

There were some diversity in the comments the other Redditors left under the post, as some of them stated that the ring is belongs to OP, since she is the only blood related granddaughter, and some other stated that the oldest granddaughter was not OP anymore, and her adopted cousin should have the ring.
