The Doula Who Helped Me Give Birth Turned Out to Be Someone Unexpected

After attending my brother’s bachelor party, I was certain my wife Allison would be furious or even consider divorce. We’d been together 25 years, but lately, our relationship was strained she felt neglected because of my demanding new job, and I was exhausted trying to keep up. I dreaded facing her the next day.

But when I woke up, I was shocked to find a rose, two painkillers, and a sweet note on my bedside table. The note said she’d made my favorite breakfast and wanted me to rest. Confused, I asked our son Jake what was going on. He told me I had come home extremely drunk, stumbled into bed fully clothed, and Allison had quietly taken care of me without complaint.

Her kindness and patience struck me deeply. Over breakfast, I realized how much I’d been neglecting her emotional needs. I apologized and promised to be more present. We spent the day reconnecting—talking about our dreams, fears, and making plans to strengthen our bond with weekly date nights.

In the weeks that followed, I made a conscious effort to show Allison love and attention. Our marriage wasn’t perfect, but that rose and her quiet support reminded me of the foundation we’d built. It was a new beginning for us, a chance to nurture the love that had carried us through so many years.
