I didn’t believe he’d reach my graduation, hence I gave it to him.

My grandfather had always promised he’d be there to see me graduate, but as his health declined, I knew deep down he might not make it.

A month before the ceremony, I visited him with a small gift: my graduation cap, already decorated with our family motto. I placed it gently in his hands and said, “This is for you, Grandpa. Whether you’re there or not, a piece of you will be with me.”

He smiled, eyes shining with pride, and promised to keep it by his side.

The day of my graduation arrived—and true to my fears, Grandpa wasn’t in the crowd. But as I crossed the stage, I imagined him holding that cap, cheering louder than anyone else.

Two weeks later, after he peacefully passed, I found the cap on his bedside table, worn but lovingly kept. He didn’t make it physically, but his spirit never left my side—and that made all the difference.
