Family turns garage into an adorable tiny home for granny so she can live right next door

In the heart of Portland, Oregon, a remarkable transformation took place.

An old, unused garage underwent a metamorphosis, emerging as a beautiful tiny home.
But this wasn’t just any home transformation; it was a labor of love, designed especially for a beloved grandmother.

The concept of an ADU, or Accessory Dwelling Unit, has been making waves in the world of home design.

Essentially, an ADU is a secondary housing unit situated on a family’s residential lot.
While the term “accessory” might suggest something supplementary or non-essential, these units are anything but.

They’re fully functional living spaces, often boasting the same amenities and comforts as any primary residence.

They’re a testament to innovative design, maximizing space without compromising on comfort.

Martin Brown’s journey with ADUs began when he moved to Portland.

The city, known for its vibrant culture and community spirit, was the perfect place for him to start a family.

As the family grew with the arrival of his son, Sebastian, there was another family member who wished to be closer: Martin’s mother-in-law.
She harbored a deep desire to be near her grandson, to watch him grow and be a part of his life.

But how could they ensure she had her own space while staying close?

The answer lay right in their backyard.

The family’s garage, which had been sitting unused, presented the perfect opportunity.

Instead of delving into the real estate market searching for a new property, Martin had a brilliant idea.

Why not repurpose the garage into a comfortable home for grandma?

And with that thought, the wheels of transformation were set in motion.

The design process was meticulous.
Every square foot was to be utilized to its maximum potential.

The result was a dwelling that, despite its compact nature, felt spacious and airy.

The exterior was enhanced with planters brimming with greenery and a charming walkway, creating a sense of independence and separation from the main house.

Upon entering the tiny home, one is immediately enveloped in a warm, welcoming ambiance.

A plush sofa bed beckons, strategically placed by a large glass door.
This isn’t just any sofa; it doubles up as a guest bed, ensuring the space is multifunctional.

And for those cold Portland nights?

A cozy fireplace stands ready, casting a gentle glow and spreading warmth throughout the home.

The kitchen is a marvel of design.

Compact yet fully equipped, it boasts a full-sized refrigerator, a two-burner stove, and a sink.

The absence of cabinets is cleverly countered with open shelving and hanging racks, ensuring everything has its place.

The design is aesthetic and functional, with utensils, pots, and pans easily accessible.

Above the main living area, a loft bedroom offers a sanctuary of rest.

Fitted with a queen-sized bed and a snug reading nook, it’s the perfect place to unwind.

The stairs leading up to the loft are ingeniously designed, alternating in tread to save space.

Adjacent to the stairs, a pocket door reveals a well-appointed bathroom with all essentials.

One of the standout features of this ADU is its emphasis on natural light.

While windows were limited to ensure privacy, a vast glass door and strategically placed skylights flood the space with sunlight.

The design pays homage to the garage’s history, with remnants like old fittings and locks seamlessly integrated into the decor.
While retaining its original 1920s charm, the exterior has been modernized with fresh paint, bridging the past with the present.
